The Early Mapping of Hawai'I

By: Gary L. Fitzpatrick

The cartographic history of Hawaii began with the arrival of Captain James Cook, the famous explorer and chartmaker, in 1778. Between then and the mid-19th century, visitors to HawaiI produced a rich assortment of charts and maps depicting the shores, harbors, towns, and volcanoes of the various islands. This volume traces the story of the mapping of HawaiI during the pivotal years in which the indigenous society was radically transformed by the peoples and ideas imp...

The Early Mapping of Hawaii is an overview of the history of the mapping of Hawaii from the time of European discovery in 1778 through the mid-19th century. Mapmaking was not an art indigenous to Hawaii; foreigners were responsible for the introduction of mapmaking in the islands. For well over seventy years, mapping in Hawaii was largely carried out by Europeans or Americans, and the early maps of Hawaii were mostly made to serve the needs of those foreigners.

Tratado de la Real Señera : Señeras Valencianas y Pendones Catalan...

By: Ricart García Moya

By: Author and Translator Shahram Torabi

The Friendship began with a coup in Iran in 1953 and the return of the Shah to the country followed by then vice-president of the United States Richard Nixon's trip to Iran. This friendship lasted for twenty years till 1974, when Nixon, Resigned. This friendship has many untold events that the story tries to disclose by a fiction historic book.

All were Ardeshir Zahedi's fault. The king had sent two people to the United States. Ardeshir Zahedi and Army General Hassan Toufanian. Hassan Toufanian was involved with the Shah's arms purchases in the United States, but since these purchases were of a very special quality, which often required Congressional approval, King sent Zahedi to Washington to play the role of Iran's lobby in the US Congress. With copying Israel behavior, Shah had found out if he did not have a...

Scythia : L'étonnante Histoire de l'antique Irlande

By: Hervé Cariou

A reality and an illusion hand to hand caused a mistake that changed the fate of the country. The fact was that it had long been known that America was stuck in Vietnam's swamp and could not win it. The United States was looking for a way to get out of Vietnam. Eventually, for the first ...

Witness the paroxysm of enthusiasm she (Isolde Kurz) let stand in her late, 1938 Pilgrimage: “Who could have told me then that a day would arrive when Olympiad would come to Berlin, a day on which a new German Reich – not one that was rich and triumphant, but one that was maimed and bled dry and could hardly raise itself up out of the most terrible of all crushing defeats – would, through the mouth of its Führer, give its promise freely through its own sacrifices to lay...

61 Meg Bn Gp - Bravo Kompanie Foto En Geskiedenis Joernaal 1986

By: Dawid Lotter

Roads of the World: History and the Present Day

By: Timur Cherdabayev

The book is devoted to roads, their origin and development throughout the centuries. Their history started along with the appearance of humans, their first paths, first attempts to expand the borders of their habitat. The chronicles of road connections should be considered as the history of humankind in the spatial domain at the crossroads of which the fates of nations and cultures converged and intertwined. The appearance of roads is directly related to the invention o...

In those distant times, traveling was always an unsafe business, so every merchant had to consider the risks of it. The road was rarely even, not to mention picturesque. It typically ran through a desert, often stony, with camels’ skeletons strewn all around—eerie marks, indeed, but useful for any traveler to use them for road signs. Piercing cold in winter and unbearable heat in summer. Ever-nagging thirst, fostered by the need to conserve water. Constant anticipation o...

By: Alex Amies; Gu Ban

Volume 95 of the Hanshu was previously translated to English by Wylie (1880). Given that a prior translation exists, this translation should be considered as a re-translation. Why re-translate this book? The age of the Wylie translation , lack of correlation with source Chinese text, and the archaic transliteration system used make it somewhat inaccessible to present-day readers and due for revisiting. To assist future authors to translate related texts and to help reade...

Falvey Family History : Falvey Christopher Daly Hilsberg: The fami...

By: John Lindsay FALVEY

Family histories make boring reading, by any standard, for all but those associated with the lines discussed in them. An earlier version of the Falvey and related histories achieved that standard, and as explained more fully in the Introduction to the current compilation, the anecdotes and secrets that could make a history at least memorable are usually omitted from family histories. That error has been corrected in this approach. In doing so, I am cognisant of the poten...
